How to choose the right gaming chair for your height and weight
Buying a gaming chair is often driven by looks or flashy features that rarely add real value. But the key question remains simple: does the chair fit your body? This guide walks you through choosing a gaming chair based on your height and weight, with practical ergonomic advice.
1. Chair size: fit matters more than aesthetics
The chair must fit you. Regardless of its appearance, if it doesn’t match your body, long sessions at it will be uncomfortable and harmful.
- Backrest height: Measure from your waist to your neck—this must align with the cervical cushion’s placement. A backrest between 80–90 cm typically suits people from 1.65 m to 1.90 m.
- Backrest width: Should support your shoulders without squeezing or leaving gaps.
- Seat height: adjust the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees form a 90° angle. If your desk is low and fixed, you may need a short gas-lift; if it’s high, choose a long gas-lift and add a footrest such as VALK OSMA so your feet don’t dangle. A height-adjustable desk like the VALK SKULD fixes the issue as well.
- Armrests: Should fit neatly under your desk and support elbows at 90°, with relaxed shoulders.
- Seat width: Ensure it supports your hips without squeezing.
2. Height adjustments: piston options matter
Leg lengths and desk heights vary. Chairs with adjustable gas-lifts (standard, short or tall) let you fine-tune seating position. Some brands even let you retrofit different gas-lifts.
3. Padding and density: the unseen quality factor
Many cheap chairs use low-density foam (25–35 kg/m³) that compresses quickly. Better chairs use molded cold foam of 50 kg/m³ or more—offering lasting support, especially for users over 70 kg.
4. Upholstery: PU, fabric or mesh?
- Fabric: breathable and cool, great for warm environments.
- PU leather: easy to clean and premium-looking, but traps heat unless micro-perforated.
- Mesh / breathable fabric: ideal for all-day use in hot settings.
5. Posture matters
Choosing the right chair is only half the battle. To reap the full benefit, you must sit properly: keep your back straight, feet flat on the floor, screen at eye level and arms bent at 90°.
