If you spend many hours in your chair, sooner or later the question comes up: mesh or fabric. Both breathe better than PU leather. Both work for hybrid work and gaming. But they are not the same chair for the same person.

Here is what changes between one and the other, and who each one suits best.

How mesh behaves

Mesh is a tensioned fabric stretched over a frame. That means two things: it ventilates a lot and it supports firmly.

  • Ventilates more than any other material. Air goes right through the fabric. In summer or without air conditioning, you notice it straight away.
  • Serious office look. If the chair shows up on video calls or you work around other people, it is the one that draws the least attention.
  • Firm support. A well designed mesh adapts to the curve of your back without sagging over the months.
  • Almost no maintenance. Occasional gentle vacuuming and that is about it.

Worth noting: in winter, the first few minutes can feel a bit cold. It passes quickly.

In the VALK range, the most complete mesh option is the VALK MYLA, with Flextex mesh, synchro PRO mechanism and full adjustment. As an alternative with a stronger gaming character, you have the VALK Noma.

How fabric behaves

Fabric covers the seat and the backrest with a continuous surface. The result is a chair that feels softer when you sit down and a bit warmer, without getting hot the way PU does.

  • Comfortable from the first minute. The feel is similar to a sofa. More welcoming.
  • Breathes well. Not as much as mesh, but far more than PU. For most people, enough all year round.
  • Discreet but not dull. It fits a mixed setup without looking too gaming.
  • It ages well. It does not crack, it does not split in the sun and, with a minimum of care, it stays as good as new.

If you want to go deeper into care, you have the dedicated article: Fabric gaming chairs: real advantages and how to take care of them.

When mesh suits you

  • You get hot easily or your workspace gets warm.
  • You work more hours than you game.
  • You want a chair that looks like an office one, not a gaming one.
  • You are after fine adjustments for long days at the screen.

If you see yourself here, the option is the VALK MYLA.

When fabric suits you

  • You split your hours between work and gaming.
  • Heat is not your main concern.
  • You prefer a soft feel over the firmness of mesh.
  • You do not want a chair that looks too gaming.

In fabric, the most complete VALK is the VALK Freya Elite: magnetic neck cushion, lumbar support, high density foam and an adjustment system built for many hours in a row.

In the same line but more accessible: VALK Freya fabric and VALK Gaia fabric, both with cold moulded 55 kg/m³ foam.

And PU leather, what about it

PU leather looks good, photographs well and is easy to clean. The catch shows up with the hours and the years: it retains more heat than fabric and quite a bit more than mesh, and if the chair sits in a dry spot or in direct sunlight, it can end up cracking.

If PU still appeals to you, take a look first at how to prevent the synthetic leather (PU) from cracking.

What matters beyond the upholstery

The material counts, but it does not decide on its own. A comfortable chair also depends on:

  • Foam density. What keeps the seat from sinking over time.
  • Backrest mechanism. Synchro, multifunction or butterfly. Each one feels different.
  • Adjustments. Height, depth, armrests, headrest. If it does not fit you, the material does not save it.
  • Posture. A well adjusted chair used badly is still a chair used badly.

To get the size right: how to choose your chair by height and weight.

If you already have the chair but you are not making the most of it: how to sit properly.

In short

If you get hot where you work, or you want a chair with an office feel, go mesh. If you want something softer when you sit down and a balance between work and gaming, go fabric.

Both breathe better than PU. Both last. Both are in the VALK range between 300 and 400 euros. What changes is how you use it and where you use it.
