Fabric gaming chairs: real advantages and how to care for them
If you work from home part of the day and play when you can, the upholstery of your chair is not a minor detail. Fabric has become the go-to choice for many users because it’s more breathable, pleasant to the touch, and visually more discreet than PU leather. In this guide we explain when to choose fabric, what it offers versus other materials, and how to take care of it without overcomplicating things.
Why choose a fabric chair
- Cooler and more breathable. Fabric wicks heat and moisture better. You’ll feel the difference in summer or warm rooms.
- Comfortable all year round. No “sticky” feel in summer and no cold surface in winter.
- Subtle look. Fabric fits hybrid setups (work + play) and reflects less light than some PU finishes.
- Quiet. Less friction noise during long sessions.
- Balanced durability. With minimal care, fabric keeps its appearance and comfort for years.
Note: comfort isn’t only about the cover. At VALK we use cold-cured foam at 55 kg/m³ in every seat so the cushion won’t cave in and support stays firm over time.
Fabric, PU or mesh: which suits you?
- Fabric: ideal if you tend to sweat, sit for long hours, or want a discreet finish. The most versatile option.
- PU leather: very easy to clean with a more “premium” look. Can retain more heat in warm environments.
- Mesh: the most ventilated choice for intensive home-office use (e.g., VALK Noma), with a more office-like aesthetic.

How to care for a fabric chair (without obsessing)
The key is a simple routine. You don’t need weekly cleaning—what matters is doing the right thing when it’s time.
1) Light monthly routine
- Gentle vacuuming with an upholstery brush (no hard pressure) to remove dust, crumbs and pet hair.
- Quick check of seams and friction areas (seat edges and backrest sides).
2) Spills: act immediately
- Blot by pressing (don’t rub) with paper towel or microfiber cloth.
- Use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, then dry. Avoid soaking the foam.
3) Spot cleaning
- Simple mix: lukewarm water + a few drops of neutral soap. Test first on an inconspicuous area.
- No bleach, solvents or multi-purpose cleaners. Avoid direct steam.
4) Deep clean (quarterly)
- Use a fabric/upholstery foam following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Air-dry in a ventilated room. No hairdryer or heat sources.
5) Pets & odours
- Lint roller or rubber glove for hair.
- For odours, sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda, let sit 15–20 minutes, then vacuum.
Adjustments & maintenance that make a big difference
- Proper posture: seat height and armrests at 90°, feet flat on the floor, screen at eye height. Full guide: How to sit correctly.
- Basic & advanced maintenance: tighten screws, grease friction points and clean casters to avoid creaks and play. – Basic maintenance – Advanced maintenance
- Fit to your size: if you’re between sizes or desk heights, follow this guide: Choose by height and weight.
