Types of Mechanisms in Gaming Chairs: Which One to Choose and Why It Matters
The mechanism of a gaming chair is one of those components you don’t see… but you certainly feel. It connects the seat to the base and enables key functions such as height adjustment or tilting. Although it often goes unnoticed, choosing the right type of mechanism can make a real difference in terms of comfort, ergonomics, and durability.
At VALK, we work with three main types of mechanisms, integrated into our chairs depending on the model and intended use. All of them comply with European certifications EN1335-1, EN1335-2, and EN1335-3, ensuring safety, stability, and long-term performance.
1. Butterfly Mechanism
Used in our VALK Nyx, VALK Gaia, and VALK Skadi chairs, this is a simple and reliable mechanism, ideal for general-purpose use or occasional gaming. It has one lever:
- Left lever: adjusts the gas lift height.
This mechanism allows free tilt up to 15° by pulling the lever outward to unlock. It only locks in the upright position, so it’s not possible to fix the angle at intermediate points.
It also includes a central knob to adjust the tilt tension based on your body weight or preference.

2. Multifunction Mechanism
Used in the VALK Freya, this mechanism offers more refined and personalized adjustment, ideal for long sessions or hybrid use (gaming + work).
- Left lever: adjusts the gas lift height.
- Right lever: activates or locks the seat tilt angle (up to 25°).
This mechanism allows multi-position tilt locking, enhancing personalization and comfort during long days. It also includes a tilt tension adjustment knob.

3. Synchronized Multifunction Mechanism
Exclusive to our VALK Noma, this is the most advanced mechanism, designed for people who spend long hours working remotely and prioritize ergonomics.
- Left lever: adjusts the gas lift height.
- Right lever: adjusts the seat depth (up to 4 cm) to better fit your height.
This system synchronizes the movement of the backrest and seat, maintaining the ideal angle between back and legs. It also includes tension regulation to match the user’s weight.

Important: Backrest Recline
In all our models, the recline mechanism for the backrest is independent from the seat mechanism. It is controlled by a lever located on the right side, where the seat meets the backrest.
Maintenance and Spare Parts
All our mechanisms come with a 3-year warranty. If you ever need to replace a component, check our original VALK spare parts section, where you'll find technical diagrams and measurements to check compatibility with your chair—even if it's not a VALK.
